Convert a 10-point CGPA (or 7/5/4-point) to the US 4.0 scale three ways 鈥?the linear rule of thumb, a WES-style estimate, and the UGC percentage route 鈥?because which method you use changes the number.
3.4 clears the common 3.0 floor 鈥?good standing for most US master's programmes.
Most programmes want a 3.0 minimum; selective ones start around 3.5. Which of the three numbers you quote depends on the evaluation method the programme requires 鈥?report the CGPA and let their evaluation produce the rest.
A CGPA is one number on a 10-point scale; a US GPA is a credit-weighted average of letter grades. Sliding the CGPA straight across (梅10 脳 4) is the most common shortcut, but evaluators, Indian regulators and individual universities each have their own reading 鈥?and they land in different places.
CGPA 梅 10 脳 4. Simple and reproducible. It treats the CGPA as a pure fraction of the maximum, which is fair as a default and systematic about undervaluing the top of the scale.
Tier-adjusted, course-by-course reading as credential evaluators apply it. For recognised Indian institutions it typically lands above the linear figure 鈥?8.0 around 3.4鈥?.6, 8.5 around 3.7鈥?.9.
The UGC route muddies it further: India's University Grants Commission converts CGPA to percentage as CGPA 脳 9.5 (8.5 鈫?80.8%), and that percentage, pushed back through a 梅25 GPA rule, gives about 3.2 鈥?lower than the direct linear figure. Two official-looking methods, two different answers. That's why this page shows all three and why the one that matters is whatever your target programme requires.
If your transcript carries credits as well, pair the grade conversion with ECTS 鈫?US credits or the reverse 鈥?credits and grades travel together.
CGPA 梅 scale-max 脳 4. The standard assumption behind most percentage and GPA fields. Fine as a default, conservative at the top of the scale.
Tier-adjusted reading in the manner of WES / ECE. Documented mainly for the Indian 10-point scale, where it typically returns higher than linear for strong CGPAs. WES does not publish a fixed table; this is a typical-value estimate.
CGPA 鈫?percentage using India's UGC formula, then percentage 鈫?GPA. Valid for the 10-point scale; useful when a form asks for a percentage first.
Indian universities publish different percentage formulas 鈥?Anna uses (CGPA 鈭?0.5) 脳 10, VTU (CGPA 鈭?0.75) 脳 10 鈥?and your registrar's figure overrides any general rule. Report the transcript CGPA as-is and let the required evaluation method produce the GPA.

| 9.5 | 3.8 | 3.9 鈥?4.0 | 90.3 | Exceptional |
| 9.0 | 3.6 | 3.8 鈥?3.9 | 85.5 | Top tier |

| 8.0 | 3.2 | 3.4 鈥?3.6 | 76.0 | Grad-school-competitive at many programmes |
| 7.5 | 3.0 | 3.3 鈥?3.5 | 71.3 | First-division; clears the 3.0 floor |
| 7.0 | 2.8 | 3.0 鈥?3.2 | 66.5 | Below the 3.0 floor on linear |

| 6.0 | 2.4 | 2.6 鈥?2.8 | 57.0 | Below most graduate floors |
WES-style figures are typical-value ranges across recognised Indian institutions; exact results vary by institution tier and course mix.
Figures last verified August 2026 路 WES-style values are typical ranges, not official WES output; the WES result is course-by-course and institution-specific
